Birth Order and the Zodiac
By Sharzi Avins (c) 2001

The order of your birth and the Sign of the Zodiac in which you were born can constitute what your personality will be like. A lot of bunk you say? Don't be too quick to overlook the signs!

Think of it this way, if the position of the moon and it's fullness are in direct proportion to the amount of water in your body (proven medical fact), then couldn't it be that the precise moment you were born and the environmental conditions (your place in your family) in which you were raised can indeed add up to who and what you will be? There are exceptions to every rule, so keep that in mind.

Are you a procrastinator? Are you experiencing writer's block? Are you the type who writes constantly? Maybe you question your abilities all the time. Let's see if your sign or order of birth could be the reason!

BIRTH ORDER

In the following, pick the number that most describes you, and well see if we're right about your position in your family order....

  1. Great entertainer, sometimes the life of the party.
Has a hard time deciding on things, often looks to others for help.
    Free spirited
    Playful
    Sometimes rebellious

  2. As a child, often played quietly or alone
    Often asks challenging questions
Often takes both sides of an argument
    Upset if not noticed

  3. A natural leader
    Makes decisions quickly and concisely
    Competitive
    Very conscious of rules
    A consummate list maker

  4. Tended to mimic adult behavior as a child
Takes the bull by the horn in difficult situations
Often gets along with older people rather then those of their own age

Okay, now it's time to see if you fit these categories....

  1. This is the lastborn. He/she is the baby of the family and by the time this child is born, the parents are much more relaxed about their parenting. The children, lastborns often say things like, Its not fair, why do they get more attention than me? They sometimes look for attention by being funny. And sometimes take it to an extreme, even to the point of crying to get attention. As adults they are normally the salesmen, the life of the party, the most lovable.

  2. This is the middle child. They often feel forgotten, so they seem to be always asking, Where is my place? In groups they don't seem to have much of an opinion. When they do say something, it is often in defense of both sides of any situation. They tend to not want to commit to one side or the other for fear of offending. They are lovable, but sometimes feel as if they will never fit.

  3. This is the firstborn. Parents are so conscious of doing things the right way, so the firstborn gets a lot of attention. Firstborn are eternal list makers. They must stay organized in their thinking. In a group, they tend to be the ones making sure things stay structured. They are the peacemakers, always wanting things worked out. More times than not, because of their perfectionism, they become overwhelmed, but usually find a way to get back into the swing of things.

  4. This is the only child. This child not only has their parents full attention, but they have it much longer than the normal firstborn. Because they are the only child, they tend to be around adults more, hence they feel most comfortable around them. They also tend to develop traits very much like the firstborn.

The dynamics can change....

If there is an age gap of 7 to 10 years between children, the second child not only takes on traits of the middle child, but also has the attributes of a firstborn. Another child born after this would be like a middle child and also a lastborn.

Please jot down your particular birth order traits.

THE ZODIAC
In this section we'll examine your zodiac sign. This is in relation to the exact day of your birth. This can be broken down to the time and alignment of the stars and planets, but for the purpose of time, we'll just go by the day.

Please find your sign and jot down some of those traits.

NOTE: If your birthday falls within 2 days of another sign (either before or after), you fall on the "cusp." This means you will most likely have traits from that sign as well. For example, I'm a Virgo on the Libra cusp. I have both traits... balanced, artistic, focused on others, sense of fair play, attention to detail, born to serve, etc.

Let's see what your traits are....

Aries - March 21 to April 20
The mighty Arian is a leader. Have a project needing a jump-start? An Arian, Pied Piper of people, has a magnetism and drive that takes them easily into the unknown. Sometimes impulsive, blunt, bold, aggressive and courageous, the Arian possesses an inner strength that makes for an independent and competitive nature. Sometimes considered arrogant and domineering, they might tell you that it takes a lot to be a leader. Unfortunately the Arian is so opposed to the idea of defeat that they may not stick around for the end of a project. Chances are, they would already be working on the next one.

Taurus - April 21 to May 21
Taureans are all about physical pleasures. They revel in the touch, and enjoy material goods. Comfort is top on the list and that includes a good meal or fine wine. Artistic by nature, they surround themselves with art that pleases their need for tactile delicacies. Often bullheaded and stubborn, they start any project with the intention of getting things done. There is a practical and reliable side to a Taurean in the pursuit of their goals. They work hard for what they want, and their rewards are often looked on as self-indulgent. But, if material goods are their desire, they deserve it.

Gemini - May 22 - June 21
Geminis can see both sides of every coin. You can't be sure which twin will show itself -- the Gemini may not even know -- which could appear as if they are restless and easily swayed as their mood changes on a whim. Because they are quick-witted and bright, they love intellectual conversation. They work hard on relationships and are very adaptable. The life of the party, Geminis have an abundance of imagination. Capable of multitasking on many levels, they often fall behind or fail to follow-through. Not for lack of trying, the Gemini simply has too many interests and never enough time.

Cancer - June 22 to July 22
Cancers are the ultimate family oriented personality. Home and nurturing often take top priority. Considered moody, they are emotional beings, often retreating into their shell if their mood warrants it, or if they don't get their way. It's sometimes hard to get a Cancer to share what they are feeling, but give them time, they will soon come out of their shell. They have a strong will and are prone to protecting their home and family with everything they've got. They are the consummate storyteller around the dinner table and family history will likely be the topic.

Leo - July 23 to August 23
The Leo has a personal magnetism that helps keep them center stage. With a strength of purpose and a talent for the dramatic, they make the perfect actor. The Leo is usually the ruler of their universe. They have the power to accomplish anything they set their minds to, and they will see any project through to the end, as well as inspire others to do the same. A leader, they can appear to be unbending, but everything they do is with a goal in mind. Organized and inspiring, the Leo is warm and enthusiastic.

Virgo - August 24 - September 23
Virgos work toward the common good. Their exacting behavior means they are excellent at fact-finding and will leave no stone unturned. Practical and logical, the Virgo is an asset in any workplace because they get it done right the first time -- every time. They are balanced and fair, born to serve, are industrious, efficient, methodical and have a strong sense of duty. Because they are often picky, they are perceived as repressed. The Virgo would modestly tell you that is a positive.

Libra - September 24 to October 23
Librans are balanced and have a strong ethical sense of fair play. Team players in the workplace, their objective is to study every angle, making them excellent strategists with the ability to organize and get the job done. They are best when partnered and believe two are always better than one. Librans believe in fairness and work toward keeping peace and harmony on the homefront, making them a companionable spouse.

Scorpio - October 24 to November 22
Scorpios live in a world with little gray matter. A Scorpio can be secretive and complex. Curious, intuitive and determined, they will get to the bottom of any question and reveal its secrets. Considered overbearing at times, it's only because they want things to move forward. Self-destructive in some cases, they are resourceful and have great regenerative powers, which makes them fearless and stubborn to succeed.

Sagittarius - November 23 to December 22
Sagittarians need knowledge to fuel them. Intellectual thinkers who look at the big picture, Sagittarians like others to agree with their views. They are open to the views of others, but because they can be impatient or difficult, they need space to find their own meaning of life. Don't hem them in or you may find the Sag is blunt and argumentative. They are enthusiastic to pursue their internal quest in a free and easy manner.

Capricorn - December 23 - January 20
Capricorns are driven, ambitious and determined to get to the top. Their vision is straightforward... to the end goal. They are happy putting in a full day of work. Businesslike in all they do, they are happiest once they get the success they work so hard to obtain. Efficient, organized, detail oriented, sometimes considered domineering, they wait diligently for the smell of victory. They don't always understand others who are not as ambitious as they are, but need those allies along the way, even if they are not as driven.

Aquarius - January 21 to February 19
Aquarians are humanitarians and visionaries who gift others with their amazing ideas with no expectations for anything in return. Happiest when the world agrees with them, they can be impatient and set in their own opinions. They like when things go their way. Because an Aquarian is individualistic and loves freedom, they need a lot of space. Giving in relationships, they are compassionate and sympathetic.

Pisces - February 20 to March 20
Pisceans should never be underestimated. They hold within them all the traits of the other Signs, but you'd never know it because they are humble. They have a very highly evolved intuition, are selfless, spiritual, and their feelings define them. Pisceans are easy going with a duality about them -- between reality and dream. They are almost psychic in nature. They feel safest in their 'netherworld', but though they may escape for a while, they will return to put the needs of others before their own, which is often taken advantage of.

Okay, list 5-10 short traits you have from both your birth order and zodiac sign. If you're on the cusp, include traits from both of the signs you fall under.

HOW DO THESE RELATE TO YOUR WRITING?
Now that you've listed your traits, think about how they relate to your writing. Are you a Taurus -- maybe you write romances about physical pleasures? An Aries who begins a book and then abandons it before it's done? A Pisces who writes fantasy or spiritual stories? How about a Capricorn -- devoted to detail? Maybe you write clear cut nonfiction like a Scorpio might?

Perhaps you're a firstborn and have a penchant for doing research and balancing the details of your work. A middle child may have a hard time figuring out where their work fits, or feels that others have more of a grasp of writing. A baby in the family might write humor or stories that give the reader a good feeling... light and uncomplicated.

If you are a pretty good match to the traits of your birth order or sign, chances are you will fall into some of those categories in many areas of your life. And, knowing what they are, you will be in a better place to examine those traits and try to find ways to expand on them.

Do you procrastinate? If so, look at your list of traits. Does anything there suggest a predisposition for it?

Are you often blocked, feeling as if you just can't write? Are your list of traits a clue?

Are you jealous of what others are capable of doing? Do you feel as if your work will never be as good?

Do you write to the end of your novel/story/article and then abandon it? Is it sitting in a drawer? Do you keep yourself from submitting? Why? Could it be because you're a middle child? Maybe your zodiac traits can be self-defeating?

My reason for writing an article like this is that we all question ourselves. Some of us can write fast and furiously, while others will mosey along until a story is finally written. Yet, others can't seem to finish any story. We beat ourselves up for these things too! Sometimes it's in our nature and our nature CAN be a direct result of our time and place in this world.

Now that you know, focus on the positive traits and move forward in your writing career!
