Dr. Robert L. Moore, Jungian Analyst, in the Foreword of this book, says that proverbs are an ancient form used by sages of old to communicate truth to their audience through simple, yet piercing thoughts. "The purpose, as philosopher Paul Ricoeur would note, was to break through the 'enchanted enclosure of consciousness' in which most of us live and call us to a new level of awareness, clarity, and responsibility for our personal and social lives." Dr. Moore also says, "Jones is a worthy guide to offer us 'wisdom for the journey.' Unlike many who offer advice to others, he has been willing to practice what he preaches to do his own in-depth work, to face the Dragon in the Shadow, to face his own death, to claim his own joy."

"Wisdom for the Journey" is a book of proverbs written for modern men and women by Don Jones of Indianapolis, Indiana. Jones has had a long life of spiritual leadership including his years of service as a minister in the Christian Church, and as head of nonprofit organizations for the healing of youth and adults. His seminar teaching in the field of masculine psychology, and his healing of souls as a psychotherapist also lend credibility to the proverbs presented in his book.

The book is divided into segments such as Proverbs on Feelings, Proverbs on Relationships and Intimacy, Proverbs on Practical Living, and Proverbs on Death and Afterwards. In the section on Feelings I particularly liked, "Be more ready to lose the approval of others than to hide your feeling heart," and "Stored tears never remain fluid, but harden into despair."

In the section on Relationships and Intimacy, I found these proverbs to be helpful. "Until you are intimate enough with yourself, intimacy with others will feel like a trap," "Do not get hooked by those persons who are using your fullness to supply their emptiness." "Among a throng of suitors, always prefer that person who is kindest to your heart." And "The one thing needful for a life of joy is a heart of love   no longer dammed by fear and anger over previous hurt, but flowing outward to heal the hurt of others."

The following quotes from Proverbs on Death and afterwards spoke with power to my own heart. "To die is not bad in itself   but to die lifelessly, without heart or feeling   is pure tragedy." "Only love can build a bridge across the abyss of death." And "By the time you die you are to be more powerful, wise, and loving than at any time of your life."

Jones has filled his little book of wisdom with many thought-provoking sayings said in such a way as to bring light to all who travel life's highway. You may order "Wisdom for the Journey" by going to the publisher's web site:  www.twosnakespublishing.com

At the web site, you will also find a perpetual calendar  published in July 2001 which contains some of the proverbs from "Wisdom For The Journey" as well as new proverbs designed to inspire each of us, on a daily basis, to seek our own inner wisdom.
