“Heroes for My Son,” by Brad Meltzer is the New York
Times bestselling novelist’s first venture into nonfiction. Meltzer
says, “Since the day my first son was born, I’ve been writing this book
for him. It’s a collection of heroes throughout history. Some are famous
(Jim Henson, Rosa Parks, Mr. Rogers). Some you’ve never heard of. The
result is this book—a gift to my sons . . .”
The goal was to write a book about heroes who taught life values by example not
lectures. So, “This isn’t a book about how to be remembered, it’s a book about
how we live our lives and what we are capable of on our very best days.” Meltzer
goes on to say, “We all are who we are, until that moment when we strive for
something greater.”
Here then is Meltzer teaching his sons life’s most valuable
lessons through story telling just as his grandfather taught him. Each hero gets
a page easy to read to yourself or to others. There are The Wright brothers,
Orville and Wilbur who never gave up on their dream of flying even though over
and over people told them it couldn’t be done. “If we worked on the assumption
that what is accepted as true really is true, then there would be little hope
for advance.” Per Orville Wright.
I personally loved the segment on Albert Einstein. One teacher
called him a foolish dreamer and asked him to drop out. But Einstein never
stopped dreaming. As an adult, he scribbled down his ideas and hid them in a
desk drawer when his supervisors passed by. He wasn’t afraid to go against
conventional wisdom. He questioned the status quo. His idea that everything is
full of energy gave him the conclusion – E=mc2. The theory of relativity didn’t
just change the world. It showed us the universe.
You will also find stories on Dr. Seuss, Eleanor Roosevelt, Abe Lincoln, Mother
Teresa and other well known figures. Then there are stories about the not so
familiar like Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel inventors of the first superhero. At
the brink of WWII, in the midst of the Great Depression, these two kids from
Cleveland didn’t just give us the world’s first superhero. They gave us
something to believe in. They gave us Superman!
So many stories of men and women famous and unknown who gave the
world very special gifts lie within these pages. Each page is an inspiration.
The author’s desire is that as he has shared these stories with his sons and
with you, that you in turn will share them with the heroes in your life.
“Heroes for My Son” is a gift for all seasons, Father’s Day,
Birthdays, Christmas, or any day you want to gift your own special hero or
heroine with a gift of wonderment.
