Introduction
"Business as usual" is
a phrase you don't hear much these days. That's because business is
anything but usual in the electronic age. Corporate downsizings and
reorganizations have made job security an oxymoron. They have also turned
a slew of US workers into self--employed business owners. More than 20
million people in the United States now make some or all of their income
from full-time or part-time self-employment. In fact, according to the US
Department of Labor, half of all small businesses in the US are
home-based.
But how are all these
self-employed and homebased businesses doing? Some do strikingly well,
bringing in before-tax profits of over a $100,000 from back-bedroom office
"suites." Others, limp along, or fail. A study conducted for the
Small Business Administration showed that only five percent of small
businesses filing for bankruptcy had 50 or more employees. Forty-five
percent of small business bankruptcies involved businesses with one or no
employees. In one-third of the bankruptcy cases, the debts owed were under
$100,000. The debts were under $500,000 in 79 per cent of the cases.
So what makes the difference
between success and failure? Why is it that some businesses do so well
while others selling similar products or services never get off the
ground? More importantly, how can you be successful in your own business?
Hard work and good products are
part of the formula. But as anyone who has ever started a business will
tell you, they are not enough.
To be successful, you need to
know how to do business. You need to know the best ways to find customers,
to sell to them, to use technology, to cut costs and to deal with problems
that inevitably arise. And you need to know how to do it all on a
shoestring.
That's what Business
Know-How is all about.
Whether you are just starting
your business or have been running a home-based or small business for many
years, the ideas, tips and hints in Business Know-How could
help you bring in tens of thousands of dollars of extra income each year.
The book will also save you thousands of dollars every year by avoiding
costly mistakes. I've personally used many of the strategies in this book
to grow and profit from my own small business as an online content
provider and web developer. So I know they work. I hope you'll put the
tips and hints you find here to good use in your business, too.
