Previous: Business Know-How Celebrates 17 Years Online! If you already applied for and got an extension for filing your 2004 income taxes, your deadline for filing is now August 15. If you haven't filed yet, and can't make that deadline, you can file for another 2-month extension. Here are the directions from the IRS for applying for the extension. Taxpayers with special circumstances or hardships should file Form 2688, Application for Additional Extension of Time to File, before Aug. 15. This extension request is not automatic. If the IRS approves the Form 2688 request, taxpayers will have until Oct. 17 to file their return. Taxpayers should read Form 2688 instructions carefully to ensure they provide an explanation for their extension request. The extension applies only to the deadline for filing the tax return, not time for paying taxes owed. Taxpayers can file Form 2688 electronically with the IRS. The form can be sent to IRS e-file either through tax professionals or through personal computers. Taxpayers also may mail it to the IRS center where their tax return must be filed. IRS e-file and the Free File program, the partnership between the IRS and a consortium of tax software providers, will be available through Oct. 17. Free File provides free software and e-filing for qualified taxpayers. Also, Telefile for taxpayers who use Form 1040EZ will cease operations after Aug.15. You can download a pdf of Form 2688 from the IRS: Instructions for electronic filing are here: | Comments (3) Comments Hi Jeff, Posted by: Janet on August 16, 2005 at 10:20 PM Jeff is right, madam. I am a level-1 tech, and there is NOTHING on IRS.gov that actually explains how to e-file from PC. At this point, I must assume, you have to buy a proprietary software product. Absolutely useless. The IRS *claims* you can send in form 2268 electronically, but try finding out how at the 11th hour. The IRS website lists 15 or more e-file possibilities, but out of the 5 or 6 I looked at, I could find NONE where you could actually file 2268 electronically. Maybe it is possible, but I couldn’t find it. I have learned my lesson not to wait until the last minute..although my intention was NOT to file an additional extension.
