How Online Advertising Influences Sales
Posted by Janet Attard

What kind of online advertising most influences buyers in the United States? Do online users respond best to email ads, customer web reviews, search engine results, or ads on their favorite websites?

Well, if you think email marketing may come in dead last in that group, you'd better, think again. As reported in eMarketer, Merkle's "View from the Inbox" study, conducted with Harris Interactive found that half the people who were surveyed made a purchase last year as a result of permission-based email they received.

The study showed some other interesting trends regarding what else influences online purchases. Apparently, customer age and geographic location in the US make a difference. For instance, reviews on company websites influence 18% of people aged 18-34 (any location) and 17% of people who live in the West (any age.). However search engine results pages have the most influence on the buying decision for people aged 45-54, and promotional email works best for people in the North Central regions of the country.

Unless you have a double opt-in permission list of people wanting to receive your email message, the response and consequently the influence on them to realize a sale is very slim. I believe search engine results pages have the most influence on the buying decision of people online, no matter the age group. Thanks!

Yes, permission-based mailings are what drive sales. But it’s not too difficult to build a permission-based mailing list. In fact, if you are buy PPC ads to drive traffic to your site and don’t have an opt-in mailing list visitors can sign up for, you’re throwing away a lot of your advertising money.

Hi….good article.

I am just starting a web site and have found that I need to build a opt in list.

I have made a blog and about ready to go…I have a few things to learn and figure out how to set things up to be able to build a list data base.

Do you have a certain service that handles your opt in data…..thanks

Yes, we use two different services for different mailing lists. The one I recommend for beginners and people who don’t know much about HTML is Constant Contact. We have been using them ourselves since 2002. Scroll up towards the top left side of this page and you’ll see a link to their site. Look under Products and Service for the section that says Productivity & News and click on the “do-it-yourself email” link. The link takes you to a free, 60-day trial offer. We are a reseller for that service, so you’ll see our logo there along with the Constant Contact logo.

The other service we use is called aWeber (look for banners from them on the Businessknowhow.com site). That has a lot of features - including the ability to set up autoresponders - but it seems a bit more complicated for web newcomers to set up.

I would add there is a free site for uploading videos ads for your business http://adwido.com unlike http://youtube.com Also noticed they have image uploads if you are not yet up to videos. The more sites you can link to the greater your market will be. They have a free link exchange as well.
