We Hold These Truths To Be Self-Evident...

I'm not trying to be rhetorical, but how well do microbusinesses think Congress has done this year to represent their interests?

Not surprisingly, not well at all, according to an online poll taken by 602 members of the National Association for the Self-Employed (NASE) between July and September. A full 93% say, no, our elected officials are neither representing them nor protecting them. With that in mind, it also won't come as a surprise that 41% think Congress and the Bush administration place zero importance on small business and self-employed issues, while another 38% believe they're of slight importance.

Among the top issues microbusinesses say they expect to face in 2009:

38% Slowing economy
19% Cost of health coverage
12% Tax equity and complexity
11% Increased energy costs
05% Access to capital/ financing for business

Their concerns for their family don't differ, albeit in a reprioritized order:

26% Cost of health coverage
25% Slowing economy
15% Increased energy costs
9% Housing-related issues
05% Tax equity and complexity
05% Retirement security

These results echo findings by Fortune Small Business in its own poll of entrepreneurs, who were asked to cite the two most important issues in determining who the were going to vote for president. Top answers included:

50% Jobs/economy
34% Terrorism
27% Energy costs
19% Taxes
18% Health care

What issues are of chief concern to you? And -- I'm almost afraid to ask -- which presidential candidate do you think would truly come through for small business? (Yes, neither is an acceptable response!)

The Obama/Biden ticket is the only viable answer, say members of my firm’s staff. Each of them is trying to support themselves, provide for their families and save for retirement. We all realize that the Republican party is no longer interested in the well-being of individuals in the American public, but is held captive by huge corporations and special interest groups. Our company cannot survive under the failing economic policies of the last eight years. We need a trickle-up, not trickle-down approach to restoring the middle class to a position of security and prosperity.

Ralph Nater, that is who I am voting for because the both of the main canidates just are part of what made things go wrong we need to completely clean house and start a new with honest people not people who are in it for themselves and who have been in the goverment so long they have carved out a home and a niche of comfort and forgoten what the real world looks like or does. I truly am tired of these politicians lying and showing charts and going behind our backs doing dirty deals and allowing our money and our young american lives to be wasted.

Let’s face it political campaigns are one of the biggest marketing campaigns any of us are exposed to - and also increasingly one of the most expensive. I don’t care who wins I just hope we see a positive change towards accountable politicians.

My biggest concern is the socialism that appears to be coming with the Obama presidency. There’s already talk of nationalizing 401(k)s as an example. It’s impossible to plan ahead when the rules have the potential to be changed overnight! Assumptions of the past are not necessarily good ones for the future. Pretty scary time if you ask me. Regardless, what’s one to do but drive on?!!

#1 issue for me is price of Internet access and bandwidth speed. I want it to be free and nationwide. That would benefit all businesses!

I do suspect a turn around with the Gobama administration and a lot of new congress people under the age of 50 next go around. Thank the lord!
