Know-How For Hire: Top 100 Web Skills

by Gayle Kesten

While the economic recession continues to roll on, Elance's June jobs report provides an unprescribed dose of optimism -- providing you have the right skill set.

Elance, which I blogged about earlier this year, is a Web site that connects employers looking to freelance projects they don't have the time or expertise to do themselves with skilled contractors who can meet those needs. It's a valuable resource no matter which half of that relationship you represent, and something is clearly working given this week Elance says it'll be passing the $200 million mark for work that has gone through the site. "The notion of working with someone who is a stranger and paying them for important work to get done doesn't sound as far-fetched as a few years ago," said Brad Porteus, Elance's chief marketing officer, when we spoke in February. (Apart from Elance, it's also the way I've been working for two years.)

ELN_index_june_05292009.pngMy conversation with Porteus came a couple of weeks prior to the company's launch of the monthly Elance Online Work Index, which ranks the skills most in-demand on the Web based on data from tens of thousands of jobs posted on Elance. (Jobs fall into eight broad categories, each of which are then further divided into dozens of specific skills.) Since March, the types of expertise cracking the index's top 10 remain 80% unchanged, though positioning has fluctuated a few spots in either direction. Big picture, "businesses are in need of people who can code, people who can design, and people who can write," Porteus blogged.

Elance offers this perspective about index activity, and it's valuable insight whether you're the one with the goods, are considering a new career path, or need of someone to fill the following gaps for your own small business:

  • Cracking The Code: With PHP (#1) holding the top spot for the third consecutive month followed closely by MySQL (#3), HTML (#4), and CSS (#5), the profound need for coding scribes continues to remain a steady constant. AJAX (#13), Javascript (#20) and XHTML (#29) all moved up this month, while ActionScript (#72) made an impressive showing by leaping up 24 spots.
  • Envisioning The Art: Design and multimedia skills maintain their presence on the Elance Online Work Index. Adobe Photoshop (#6) rose one spot while Flash (#9) ascended into the top 10 by moving up three positions. Graphic Design (#12), Logo Design (#14) round out the top 20, and Art Direction (#74) showed itself as one of the index's biggest gainers in leaping 20 positions.
  • Crafting The Content: The skill required to craft words meticulously together is riding high with the momentum of a freight train behind it. Article Writing (#2) dethroned MySQL to claim the second spot while Web Content (#7) and Content Writing (#10) both dashed into top 10 territory. Specialized writing skills are hot with Online Writing (#17), Creative Writing (#24), Business Writing (#32), Copywriting (#34), Academic Writing (#37), Sales Writing (#39), Ghostwriting (#42) occupying coveted spots in the top 50, while Technical Writing popped 32 spots to #65 on the list.
  • Drupal Dominates: Content management systems make a strong showing this month with WordPress (#8) cracking the top 10 and Joomla! (#18) in the top 20, but the biggest surprise is Drupal's (#53) 22 position climb. Perhaps the White House's use of the platform in its latest project, Recovery.org, has the CMS world buzzing.
  • Email Handling: No one we know covets the time spent wading through email trying to find the important from the mundane. Companies have discovered the benefits of hiring experts to handle email, with Email Handling jumping 24 slots to #60 of skills in demand.

Thanks so much for adding another dimension to my business model

Email handling is definitely an important web skill, as more and more companies are using email marketing to promote their products.

Hello Gayle,

Elance is one of the most professional outsourcing resource from what I have heard so far and definitely email marketing is something that should be outsourced as most of the business owners do not have the time or the inspiration to do it themselves, or simply devote their time to others marketing aspects of their businesses.

Which should be many :)

Great article, thank you very much
