Discover Small Business Watch Index Shows Signs Of Warmth
Posted by Gayle Kesten
Attitude is everything, right? An optimistic one certainly can't hurt, even when things are far from perfect. In my little part of the country, the sky is blue and it looks like spring, but one step out my front door, and I'm back in the house grabbing my gloves. Still, I know the cold days are dwindling, and maybe, just maybe, small-business owners' confidence in the economy is starting to thaw, as well.

Snow and Business Don't Mix
Snow days on Long Island are great for kids, but not so hot for local businesess, as the top photo shows. That's a view of the street outside the building where Business Know-How has its office. It's usually a busy road - it runs down one side of a busy shopping mall. But, today, as you can see from the photo,...

The Delicate Art Of Giving Constructive Criticism
posted by Gayle Kesten Perhaps I hang with a sensitive bunch, but constructive criticism is a real toughie for most of my working women sisters. Because no matter how you spin it, constructive criticism is still criticism.

Best Small Workplaces In the US?
Which are the best small businesses to work for in the US? WinningWorkplaces.org and the Wall Street Journal are collaborating to identify outstanding small organizations in North America for their third annual ranking of Top Small Workplaces. In making their selection, they'll be looking for employers who foster teamwork, flexibility, high productivyt and innovation and also help their employees grow personally and professionally. To be considered, small employers must be independent (ie, not part of a bigger corporation), have 500 or fewer employees, have $200 million or less in annual sales, and have been in business for at least 5...

Go Ahead And Have Your Office Holiday Party
Posted by Gayle Kesten
A day after widespread layoffs, my former company went ahead with its preplanned summer BBQ. Biting into my burger that hot day several years ago, I couldn't help but wonder if cancelling the event could have saved someone's job. So here we are less than three weeks away from the holidays. Anyone in the mood to party with co-workers?

Sarah Palin -- The Ultimate Working Mother?
posted by Gayle Kesten
While VP potential Sarah Palin could very well become the ultimate example of what working mothers can accomplish, I'd say the following no matter which party she represented: Given what's on her family plate, it's debatable whether even Wonder Woman would be up to the monumental demands of helping to run the country.

US Flag Photo
Are you looking for a US flag image to display on your website? Here's a photo I shot at at a rest stop on a highway that runs from Colorado down into New Mexico. You may use this image or any of these variations on your own personal website. (You may not sell or redistribute the image in anyway, however. If you want others to know about it, just point them to this page.)...

Quick Way To Lose Business
What's the quickest way to alienate your sales prospects before you get a chance to make a serious pitch? Misspell important words when you send email (or spam) to potential customers. Here's the headline from an email I just got: "Freelance writing for you and your bussiness." The same email was also being used, apparently to solicit writers to work for the company. Ironically, the bottom of the email included an image of a gold seal with the words, "World's Best Writing Service." Below that was the slogan: "Clients and Writers pay the Lowest fees at [sitename.com]"...
