Where the economy is headed – one viewpoint

Regrettably, real life is about to imitate art - in this case a good horror movie. You know, the one in which the homicidal relatives that the family has kept hidden and locked up in the basement are about to escape. For decades, our economy has prospered by ignoring common sense fundamentals just like Dorothy was told to ignore the “man behind the curtain.” But we can't ignore what's behind the curtain or down in the basement anymore.

Interest Free Loans from the Government

Do you have an existing, viable small business that's suffering financial hardships as a result of the recession? If you are based in the US and can show evidence of profitability or positive cash flow in one of the last two years, you could be eligible for an interest-free, no-fee loan of up to $35,000 through the America's Recovery Loan (ARC) program. The program goes into effect on June 15, 2009 and runs "as long as funding is available or until September 30, 2010, whichever comes first."

Credit Card Changes? Watch Out For These Pitfalls!

Is your credit card expiring? Did your credit card company just close down all business accounts (like Advanta Small Business did recently)? If you have good credit, you're likely to be blasé about any change in your credit cards. The credit card company will renew your card, or if they've closed all accounts you'll just get another card. So, other than an annoyance, it's no big deal, right?

Stuck Between a Credit Card and a Hard Place

posted by Gayle Kesten

Common small-business wisdom holds that you should separate your personal credit-card expenses from your company credit-card expenses. But will that truly be in your best interest -- no pun intended -- when President Barack Obama signs into law today the Credit Card Accountability Responsibility and Disclosure Act?

Small Business Outlook Survey Results

How are small businesses doing in the current economy? Are all businesses equally effected? What steps are they taking to make it through the recession? What do they wish the government would do to help make it through the year? These are some of the questions we sought to answer in our 2009 Small Business Outlook survey, which we ran in March.

Recession Aside, You Still Need To Advertise

Posted by Gayle Kesten

Gimme an R… Gimme an E… Hey, have you heard? We're officially in a recession -- and have been for, oh, about a year now. I know it's nothing to cheer about, but maybe poke fun at the late-to-the-table declaration, as Fortune's Stanley Bing does so well -- why not? (He had me at "No, Duh.")

Rising energy costs hit small businesses hardest

The US Small Business Administration (SBA) Office of Advocacy released a study today showing what most small businesses already know- that they're getting scorched by rising energy costs. According to the study, the small manufacturing and small commercial sectors top the list of burdened industries, on an energy cost per value of industry shipments and an energy cost per sales basis....

Minimum Wage Bill Passes House

The House passed a minimum wage bill yesterday that would increase the federal Minimum Wage to $7.25 in three stages. I posted a brief news item about the bill on our Businessknowhow.com small business website. I also set up a place there to talk about the increase. Is it enough? Is it too much? Will it really hurt small businesses the way opponents say it will? Read the article, then talk about it in our small business forum....
