Buy Multiple Domain Names
by Janet Attard
When you buy a domain name, it's a good idea to buy multiple TLDs for that domain name. (TLD stands for Top Level Domain, and refers to the suffix on domains - .com, .net, .org, etc.) The reason: if you don't buy them and your site becomes popular, someone else will buy them and try to profit from your good name.
Which variations should you buy? If they are available, you should at least buy the .com and .net TLDs (top level domains) of a domain name (and the .org if your site is a non profit or has a name someone might associate with nonprofit organizations.) Depending on the nature of the business, the .biz, .info and .tv might be good choices as well.
Additional TLDs aren't all you should buy, though. If you do much business or expect to do much business on the web, you should consider buying misspellings and shortened versions of your domain name as well. That will prevent domain name squatters from profiting when someone types your domain into the address bar and reverses the letters or chops off part of the name.
