How to Make Money on the Web

by Janet Attard

You've probably heard stories about people making millions of dollars a year on the web. In fact, maybe you know someone boasts about making money while they sleep. You'd like to make money while you sleep, too. But you can't help wondering if it Is really possible? And, if it is possible, how can you do get your share of those Internet riches? How can you use the Internet to make an income or supplement the income from your existing business?

For starters, yes, there are people making millions of dollars on the Internet. And some of that money does come in while they sleep, or go to the ball game, or change the baby.

That said, it's never as effortless as the Internet gurus would have you believe. Whether you run a business online or offline, there's a lot of work involved in building a sustainable, successful business. If you're willing to do that work, though, here are a few of the ways that you can make money on the web:

• Selling your own line of products
• Publishing original books, records, or software
• Selling other companies' products through drop ship deals
• Selling other companies products through affiliate programs
• Getting leads or orders for services
• Selling or reselling web site space
• Creating web sites for other companies
• Creating database solutions for web site owners
• Selling banner and pop-up advertising on your own site
• Selling sponsorships of your site
• Selling classified advertising on your site
• Selling advertising space in a newsletter or mailing list you send your site visitors
• Teaching classes
• Consulting through email or an online chat
• Licensing your content to other web sites

Decide on the most likely revenue streams for your business and then plan your site's content and budget around those revenue streams.
