Website Publicity Tip

by Janet Attard

Getting publicity in the newspapers, magazines or in broadcast media is a great way to get your name out, but it won't always get visitors to your website. The reason: the media (online and off) will often refer to you and your company by name when they quote you, but won't include a link to your website. As a result, readers or listeners may not know you have a website. As an example, the name of our site is Business Know-How. Someone who is not familiar with the website typically doesn't know what Business Know-How is (they often think it's a consulting service). So, when I'm quoted and the reporter cites me as Janet Attard from Business Know-How in Centereach, NY, the reader or listener may never think to look for Business Know-How on the web.

Solving the problem is relatively easy, however. When a reporter asks you the name of your business, if your goal for the publicity is to get people to your website, give the reporter the domain name instead of the business name. Thus, I'm Janet Attard, founder of BusinessKnowHow.com in Centereach, NY.

I had to laugh a moment as I read your article! Didn't you forget something -- the link to YOUR website??!!

I'm not poking fun, because we all do the same thing occasionally.

Hmm.. That's an interesting comment, Juli. I didn't make businessknowhow.com a link because, I'm assuming anyone reading all the way through this post is already on the Business Know-How site. Most of the links in the navbar on the left and the tabs on the top go to BusinessKnowHow.com.

Were you on the site and just missed the tabs and links? Or are you surfing without images turned on? Or, did another site reproduce the entire post? The RSS feed should only be distrbuting an introduction to the text.
