Hire and promote based on ability, not friendship. It's natural to want to hire and promote friends and loyal employees as your business grows. But the friends and people who helped you get started and build your business to the point it is at today may not be the people you need to move ahead.
Before you fill a position, carefully assess what skills and abilities the position requires. Then look for job candidates who possess those skills and abilities. If there's no one on your staff now who has those skills and abilities, hire someone from outside the company who is qualified to do the work.

I believe loyalty and dedication should be rewarded.
I am in a situation that pertains to your article. I have been with a company(school system, non teacher) for 29 years and have been told point blank that loyalty and seniority have no place in receiving a promotion. It has be hinted that because of my age(48) and the fact that I can retire with thirty years of service, I am being overlooked for any promotions. The only thing thats going to happen is that I am going to retire when I complete my thirty and the school system will loose a dedicated and loyal employee.
