Staying Ahead of Rising Gas Prices
by Lisa Freeman
As I was headed home from soccer practice with my kids last night, I was worried about what Hurricane Ike was going to do to people in Texas and other states bordering the Gulf of Mexico. What hadn't occurred to me yet was what it might do to the price of gasoline in the rest of the US - that is until I passed three or four gas stations and noticed that the prices were 40 to 50 cents higher than they had been before soccer practice. According to AAA Carolinas, gasoline prices in the wholesale market spiked yesterday afternoon and some stations have even begun limiting the amount of gasoline you can purchase.
So what is a small business owner to do? Business Know-How interviewed several small business owners last year to find out how they were handling rising gas prices. You can read the article here: Rising Prices at the Pump: Small Business Owners Have Had Their Fill.
If you've had enough of your gas guzzling SUV (like I have) and are thinking of trading, you can compare the gas mileage of different vehicles with this handy MPGomatic Gas Mileage Calculator.
And if you'd like to know just what the ever-increasing price of gasoline is doing to your take-home pay, read this article from Business Know-How and Salary.com. One positive outcome: some companies are moving to a four-day work week while others are allowing employees to telecommute for part of their week.
How have gas prices affected your business and life? Do you have any gas-saving tips to share? Please post your thoughts and ideas on our message boards.
