Minimize Online Chargebacks
by Janet Attard
Chargebacks are the bane of online merchants. When you sell online, all your sales are "card not present" sales, so if a customer disputes a charge, the credit card company can "charge back" (deduct) the disputed amount from your account, even if you delivered the merchandise to the customer.
To reduce the likelihood of chargebacks for online purchases, be sure your "Thank You" page includes a prominent reminder for the purchaser to print the receipt and save it to reconcile their credit card bill. If you sell to businesses, remind the buyer to the accounting department. Send the same information in an email confirmation of the purchase as well. It's a useful second reminder of the purchase and your company name.
