Mysteries to Avoid

by Janet Attard

Do you enter a password when you log onto your computer? What about your email?

What about your website? And your PayPal account? And your merchant account? Then there’s your bank PIN number, your credit card account and your brokerage account.

In fact, these may be just a few of the passwords you use online – and off. You know them or have them written down where you can find them if you forget.

But suppose something happens to you? Suppose you are in a serious accident and lay in a coma and a family member needs to access your computer to keep your business running or contact your friends in email. Will they know the login? Will they know the password? Will they know where to find your list of passwords so they can contact business associates, employees, friends… or so they can run your business for you until you recover?

Take the time this week to list all your user names and passwords and store the list where someone in your family can find it in the event of emergency.

Let the family member know where you’ve stored your password list and why it’s important, and who they should contact if anything ever happens to you.

Some may find the following way of storing passwords a good idea as I did. I store them as a contact on my mobile.
The contact name is listed and all of my passwords, usernames and the names of the sites or bank sites are listed under the notes section of the contact. That way my kids and hubby are told that Fred Nerk is the contact (no thats not it if you are thinking of stealing my phone) and are told where the details are (thankfully my kids are really responsible). Just a tip.

Renee
