Write a User Manual For Your Business
by Janet Attard
If you or a key employee were hospitalized - or died - could your business continue? Would a family member or employee be able to step in and quickly determine what things needed to be done - and how to do them? Would they know who is responsible for what jobs in the organization, how to reach those people at home as well as at work, and who to call on for help?
Would they be able to tell who owed you money? Who you needed to pay? Who your suppliers are, where you advertise, and what the logon and password is to the company website?
What about the company bank account, loans and credit cards? If you couldn't write out checks, who could?
All of these things and other key information to keep your business running if you or other key people aren't available should be documented and stored in a safe place - a place that is only accessible to people in your family or organization you trust.
The documentation should be complete enough that it could serve as a user's manual for running your business and carrying out each major activity of the business.
