Operate the right way from the start
By Janet Attard
Most start ups operate by the seat of their pants, putting procedures in place here and there without any planning for the future. If you have good products and are good at being flexible, you may be able to survive that way almost indefinitely--if you want to keep your business small.
But if you decide to grow your business, seat-of-the-pants operation isn't going to suffice. You'll need written policy manuals, job descriptions and all the trappings of a "real" business. Without those things, your growth will be stymied by lack of direction, conflicting viewpoints on how to get things done, and wasted efforts. Furthermore, you may not be able to win the big contracts you'd like to win or need to win to stay in business.
If your business slows down at this time of the year, review your procedures and manuals or create them if they don't exist. That way you'll be ready to get off to a good start in the new year.

Excellent article. The statement that "free" are the best offers I might disagree. The old saying if it's free it probably isn't worth anything. I have experimented with the same offer of a service for free and then repeated the offer with a low price and received a better response on the offer when the customer had to purchase it rather than receive it for free. I repeated this experiment multiple times with the same result- "free" received a smaller response.
