Saving Sales One by One

by Janet Attard

If you are a retailer in a town or area that’s a tourist attraction, you know there’s nothing like a tired, bored husband (or significant other) to kill sales. Typical scenario: a wife has been browsing through your aisles, looking at various decorative candles she likes - thinking ahead a bit about gifts she has to buy, or how a particular candle would work well in the hall, or guest bathroom.

craftshop.jpgThe husband is hanging out near the door, standing first on one foot, then the other, looking bored. Very bored. Finally he says “Aren’t you done yet? Let’s get out of here.”

The result? The woman drops what she was looking at and leaves without making a purchase.

husbandbench.jpgIn what appears to be an attempt to keep husbands at bay a little longer, Prima Donna Craft Boutique, a retailer in Greenport, NY has come up with a way to let husbands cool their heels while their wives shop. They’ve installed this bench and a sign outside their shop.

Have you come up with any clever ideas for keeping your customers in your business longer?

I have a similiar idea only it is inside the store. It's a comfy couch and there is a sign that says' " Man-chair"
Also, there are some golf, sports and outdoor magazines close at hand...
Keep the men happy, let the women shop...
