Previous: Find Strength in Numbers by Janet Attard What's stopping you from starting the business you've been dreaming about? If your answer is, "Getting enough money to start the business," then maybe you should take a closer look at your plans. You may find ways to get the business rolling without spending as much as you originally planned. For example, instead of buying a new computer and software, start with the computer and software you have now. Or, if you don't yet own a computer, keep an eye out for bargains. If you were planning to buy a maxed out multimedia PC, consider whether you need all those bells and whistles. If you're just going to be typing word processing documents, you can get by quite nicely on a computer that doesn't offer much in the way of multimedia capabilities. If you're planning to buy an expensive name brand computer, shop around at local discount stores and be willing to consider alternate brands. Ask, too, if they have any "out of box" specials. These are computers that customers returned (but are in working order, or sometimes computer that were demo models (and are also in working order). We needed a new computer for the office and picked up a HP multimedia computer with a meg of memory and a big hard drive (tower only) for $330 a couple of weeks ago. Looking for useable bargains like this could save you hundreds of dollars on a computer. Once the business is up and running and profitable, you can buy that high-end of higher-priced prestige brand computer with the profits from the business. Look over every expense with the same eye for keeping costs down initially and you may find you can get that dream business off and running with the money you have available to you now. Advertising is so important in any business, but especially a new one. You can only get so far with word of mouth. My husband and I started a new Customized Motorcycle Tour business (his passion) and I put our first web site up with a pre-packaged web template. It wasn't exactly what we wanted, but it put us out there on the ethernet and people started learning about us. then I looked for sites that give your free listings that are related to what we have to sell and spent the only adv. money we had to spend on joining the Area Chamber and the ARea Tourism .... They get their materials (that include mine) out to lots of markets. Also designed and printed my own brochures, post cards and business cards. That way I just print what I need. Once I had some money in the account, I had more printed as i needed them at a cheeper cost. Start small and build. Now we have a great web site done by a knowledgeable web builder.
