Label It

If you lost your iPhone, Blackberry, digital camera, or your notebook computer and a good Samaritan found it, would they know how to get it back to you? What about the chargers for any of those small devices?

If you are like most people, the answer is, "No." That's because most people don't label their small portable devices with their name, address and phone number. So, if they drop them or happen to leave them somewhere without thinking, there's no way to identify the owner.

Like so many of the ideas I post in this blog, this lesson is one I learned the hard way - however, in my case, there was a happy ending.

Any type of small, permanent label will do. Affix the label on a flat area of the device, being sure not to cover up any ventilation holes or serial numbers or other critical information. If you can't fit a label with your full contact information, at least put your name and phone number on the label.

Don't forget the chargers for your portable devices, too. Chargers are one of the items that are frequently left behind at hotels.

I immediately put an address label inside my phone on the covering to the battery compartment. Next week I'll be traveling with 32 teens on a concert tour in NYC. I'll pass this tip along to them for their phones, i-Pods, and other essential articles, including chargers.

For traveling, I also recommend making a list of what you've labeled and where. Not only does it make a good checklist for tracking what you need, but it also makes it easier to describe anything you misplace along the way.

I think that putting too much personal information on things you might lose is dangerous. let's say I lose my cell phone, and it has my home address and phone number or email address on it. now anyone can open my contacts list and pretend to be me. its just another step towards identity theft.

I suggest insuring your simple electronics against loss or theft and keeping better track of your personal items.
