Planning for the Holidays
 Rutherford Publishing, Inc.
Reprinted with permission from Tyme Management™

Instead of letting the holiday season sneak up on you this year, you can be prepared for it. By doing little things to get ready ahead of time, you'll be able to enjoy the season rather than merely react to it. The following are ways you can get ready for the holidays:

Start a holiday savings account. Rather than relying on credit cards to foot the bill, set apart a little bit of money from your paycheck each month for holiday spending.

Keep an eye out for gifts. When shopping or looking through catalogs throughout the year, note the items that would make good gifts, and buy them when they're on sale. When on vacation, look for interesting souvenirs that would make good presents.

Make your travel plans. Schedule in advance the times and places you'll be during the holidays, so you can make the travel arrangements necessary with a minimal amount of cost and hassle.

Focus on your family. Choose a pretty day to take pictures outside, and enlarge and frame these pictures to give as presents or to use on holiday cards. Keep a journal of family events during the year, and design a family newsletter update for friends and family.

Get the little things out of the way. Go to the grocery store and stock up on nonperishable food items before the crowds arrive. Plan what you want to wear to holiday parties and events, and arrange for any dry cleaning, mending, or baby-sitting you'll need.

Create a card assembly line. Pick a night that your family is at home together to sign and address holiday cards. You may want to make this a traditional part of your Thanksgiving holiday. This is also a great time to bake holiday treats together to freeze for later.

Post a master calendar of events. Write down all of the activities and events that your family will be doing on a large calendar to keep everyone informed. Remember not to book too much excitement, but to choose only a handful of important occasions to really enjoy.

Get ready for next year. After the holidays, make a list of the gifts you gave to avoid giving people the same thing next year. For future gift ideas, write down the gifts that people liked. Update your address book by referring to the return addresses of the cards you received.
