Fast Facts About Administrative Professionals
The largest segment of the office workforce

More than 4.8 million administrative professionals work in the United States, including 3,195,000 secretaries and 1,611,000 administrative support supervisors and managers, according to the latest statistics of the U.S. Department of Labor (1998).

In Canada, a total of more than 500,000 administrative professionals includes 402,695 secretaries, 11,860 executive assistants and 93,670 clerical supervisors (Statistics Canada, 1996).

63,000 secretarial positions and 313,000 administrative support supervisor positions will be added between 1998 to 2008 (U.S. Department of Labor).

Administrative professionals handle expanding management and technology responsibilities.

  • Scheduling meetings and travel
  • Maintaining computer databases and financial records
  • Supervising and training others
  • Creating and giving presentations
